Replatforming Victoria's Department of Health onto Single Digital Presence

Salsa migrated the large health.vic.gov.au from SiteCore to Victoria’s Single Digital Presence (SDP) to access the benefits of open source and the whole-of-government platform. The project represents a very large site with over 110 different features identified for rebuilding on SDP, and over 80,000 content objects (pages, documents and components) for migration.
We used Merlin (a tool Salsa created and open sourced) to migrate the website to Victoria’s SDP. Merlin significantly reduces costs compared to traditional migration methods. We also rebuilt the site using the Ripple component library and standard patterns, to accelerate delivery and reduce cost.
The project represents a very successful migration/website build, but like most projects it had some curveballs along the way. During our presentation we’ll cover:
-How the frontend was mapped to SDP’s frontend presentation layer, Ripple
-How features and stories were reviewed and descoped
-Building of a new feature, content collections to meet client requirements
-The complex migration process, covering migration scripts and final migration to SDP
-Challenges across the project lifecycle
-The transition from site build to support
Background
Single Digital Presence is Victoria’s whole-of-government platform. It’s made up for three components:
1. Bay (an open-source platform based on Lagoon)
2. Tide (a Drupal CMS distribution)
3. Ripple coupled with Nuxt (the frontend presentation layer)

Suchi Garg
Suchi is Salsa Digital’s Technical Manager, responsible for technical leadership across Drupal projects. She has over 25 years’ experience in web development, including over 20 years in the open source web development environment. She’s held a variety of senior roles, working at companies such as Accenture, Acquia and Axelerant.
In these roles she led multi-functional teams across backend and frontend development and QA, focusing on best practice to deliver quality technical solutions. In addition she has extensive expertise leading Drupal migrations.
Suchi is also a Drupal trainer and is very active in the Drupal community, participating as a speaker and volunteer track lead for DrupalCons and local Drupal Camps.
In these roles she led multi-functional teams across backend and frontend development and QA, focusing on best practice to deliver quality technical solutions. In addition she has extensive expertise leading Drupal migrations.

Phillipa currently works at Salsa Digital as a content strategist and project manager. Phillipa was the engagement manager for health.vic.gov.au, leading the project to completion.
She has over 25 years’ experience as a corporate writer and editor, with a specialisation in online writing. She’s written blogs, website content, brochures, articles for corporate magazines, video scripts, training scripts, and multimedia displays. Phillipa also has extensive experience as a speaker and trainer, running courses in online writing, corporate writing, general ‘good’ writing, and creative writing. She’s a published author and holds a Doctor of Philosophy in creative writing.
