Putting the hyper into hypermedia: htmx 4 in Drupal

Track: Technical

Drupal is undergoing a change in the way that it handles AJAX requests, CSS transitions, WebSockets, and Server-Sent Events. Now available in core, the tiny htmx library provides a replacement for jquery and AJAX, reducing the javascript size by 71%. It also provides and alternative to headless and decoupled front ends by offering a simple way to handle dynamic front-ends.

Htmx version 4 has just been released and will be available in Drupal 12. This presentation aims to do a couple of things: introduce htmx to people that might not have seen it before; demonstrate the cool stuff it can do in the current version as well as the to-be-relased version 4; and provide some suggestions for module maintainers on moving from ajax or jquery to htmx.

In a previous life, I was a high-school English teacher and made the jump into the tech world and found myself working with Drupal. As a fairly new member to the Drupal world, I've enjoyed learning how it all works.
